Sridhar Shanmugam was trained in the most prestigious school of dance from Tamil Nadu, India. Sridhar Shanmugam has toured around the world over the past two decades, working with many of the world’s most famous artists. Sharing with Pina Bausch, Suzanna Linke, and countless others, Sridhar has been an international ambassador for the arts, and a pilgrim for art as well. A core member of Chandralekha’s groundbreaking modern dance company as well as the Cultural Centre, Chennai he has also done individual work consistently. His exacting training in Bharat Natyam traditional Indian dance, Rangoli painting, modern and post-modern dance, acting, choreography, stage lighting theatre & stage technique has made him excel in performing arts . He has received the Sangeeth Natak Akademy Awards from Govt of India, Time out Dance umbrella award from Great Britain, GIAI Award for culture and ecology from Govt of Italy as part of Chandralekha’s group, has given him the basis with which to step onto any stage or into any classroom.

Sridhar Shanmugam is an established male dancer of very high caliber in the soil of United States, has been performing extensively in the United States and India to the acclaim of critics as an intelligent performer with a keen sense of aesthetics, passion and dedication. He had his major break in the field of performing arts in India, was under the banner of" CULTURAL CENTER in Chennai under the guidance of the legendary dancer choreographer CHANDRALEKHA. His recitals in India include performances for prestigious institutions like the National Center for the Performing Arts, Bombay, Sahitya Kala Parishad Delhi Administration Cultural Department; SPICMACAY, Bharatiya Kala Kendra, House of Soviet Culture and Maxmuller Bhavan and many others. Overseas, He has had several concert recitals in the Far East, Europe, and North America, South America, Canada. A notable performance was at the Inauguration of "Festival of India in USSR" in the presence of the then President of USSR Michael Gorbechev and the then Prime Minister of India Shri Rajiv Gandhi.

Apart from being a excellent performer of ace quality, Sridhar Shanmugam has taught extensively and conducted workshops at several leading institutions including Columbia University, New York University, Brooklyn College, Brooklyn Museum of Arts, Queens Museum of Arts and many such prestigious venues. Since 2001, he has performed and lectured for the Education Department, New York City, Queens Council on the Arts. Since July 2004, a series of schools from Queens and Manhattan, long Island & Westchester have been exposed to dance and lectures by Sridhar Shanmugam under the programs of City Lore Arts Program and Hospital Audiences, Inc.

Audiences at educational performances and concerts for the Queens Museum, N Y University, and Lincoln Center out doors have been regularly exposed to his natural interpretive dance form of this tradition

A conscientious purist of Indian classical dance, he has often worked to interpret western theatre using the art of NATYAA and has choreographed the ethnic dance choreography for the Phillip Balaun “RAMAYANA” at various locations in the Tri state areas.

He has traveled extensively along the U.S. East coast performing in art venues, arts Councils and schools both public and private. His goal has been to create awareness and a truly appreciative audience of this unique and rich classical tradition and place the Indian Classical dance forms on the world pedestel. He has also worked with differently abled students in uniquely challenging projects, stimulating the ,imgs of the students and getting them interested in culture & Indian Heritage..

Sridhar Shanmugam, works for an art based non profit institute in New York. In 2004, he presented his first student in a full-length concert at the Chinmaya Mission in New Jersey and Pensylvennia, to an audience of artists and well-wishers.

In the past 9 years, Sridhar Shanmugam has performed for Lincoln Center, Kaye Play House, for Carnegie Hall, in Arts Promotion visiting over 60 groups of students in the tri-state area schools, as well as those in Westchester County, at Rochester NY, New Jersey Schools, have witnessed this art form. Sridhar Shanmugam and his accompanists are performing this service as the program was so successful.

Apart from students as the audience, Sridhar Shanmugam also continues the relationship with the Weil Music Foundation, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center Institute and performs for audiences, the Police academy in NYC which trains all the police officials.

Sridhar Shanmugam has served on panels at Queens council for the Arts, Queens Museum, Lincoln Center, Indo American Arts Council. Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Bharathiya kala Kendra and many such prestigious arts Organization.

Sridhar Shanmugam has served on several boards, both as advisor and as a moderator.
