Bharata Natyam
The sacred temple dance from temples
of India, taught in the most spiritual way with
scientific principles by Sridhar Shanmugam.
Bharata Natyam is the embodied expression of the
desire to unite with the divine. Originating 2500
years in India, substantiated by "Natya Sashtra"
the only ancient text on performing arts" was
performed in Temples as part of daily worship. Using
language of expression and gestures called "Abhinaya"
and complex foot works called "adavus",
and the longing for spiritual awakening conveyed
thru a "marga" . Every aspect of the dance
is unifying the body, mind and the intellect towards
the Supreme Being - the divine.

Adavus (Beginning Steps)
Margam (Dances)
Natya Yoga (Asana in Dance)
Tala (Rhythm)
Hasta Prana (Mudras)
*Natya Yoga Session: Unfold your bodily practice
into a moment of devotion and depth. We begin with
a Sanskrit Invocation and then work with deliberate
awareness and grounded intention through a sequence
of asanas which is specifically designed to feel
bodily alignment as a mandala of infinite grace.
*Tala and/or Theory Classes: Bharata Natyam requires
a balance of body, mind and spirit. The study of
history, Margam (dance sequencing) and Sahitya (poetic
text) is a powerful way to deepen your dance practice
as well as other aspects of of your life. These
South Indian Carnatic Tala (rhythm) exercises have
a profound ability to focus and harmonize the mind.
*Sutras from Natya Sashtra: Dance students meet
on regular basis to study the Sutras in Sanskrit.
This is a simple and profound practice that students
of any level can join in and benefit from. Begin
by learning the alphabet and work at your own pace.
